Care
Give it humid air and plenty of space for its huge shield fronds and long hanging fronds. Keeping the air humid can take extra attention indoors.
Give it bright, filtered daylight, such as near a bright window with strong sun softened by a sheer curtain. A grow light can help if daylight is limited.
Description
A solitary giant canopy epiphyte of humid tropical forest. In Sulawesi, documented plants grew on the first or second major branches of very large trees, approximately 20–30 m (66–98 ft) above the forest floor, at elevations of 300–400 m (980–1,310 ft). Unlike colonial staghorn ferns, P. grande does not normally produce basal pups.
The enormous green shield fronds are approximately 80–110 cm (31–43 in) long by 90–180 cm (35–71 in) wide. Older shields curve outward instead of lying flat, producing a deep basket that captures water and organic debris. The broad upper crown spreads outward and divides three to five times into fairly even lobes. Water-storage tissue develops within the nest.
Mature fertile fronds are produced in symmetrical pairs and may hang 50–120 cm (20–47 in), with specimens in Sulawesi reported as long as 230 cm (91 in). Each frond divides into two approximately equal wedge-shaped main lobes, and each main lobe carries one broad, nearly semicircular spore patch. The remaining side branches fork repeatedly and hang below the plant.
